Tallangatta is a magnificent little town, right near where the Murray and Mitta Rivers meet, and at the top end of Lake Hume, the first dam on the Murray River. The fishing is magnificent and the climate is wonderful - we get all four seasons. Tallangatta, to give you some perspective, is a half hour's drive from Wodonga and Albury (the new freeway is fantastic), making it an ideal commute to a high-employment region. It is also close to the Snowy Mountains, and similarly close to the Victorian ski fields. The magnificent wineries of Rutherglen and Bright are just a stone's throw away, and the local rivers teem with fish (Dartmouth Dam is about an hour's drive). Our little town is the centre for the region with the Shire Council offices located here. The town is well serviced by banks, a very well supplied supermarket, good health services and excellent schools. We have hairdressers, a hardware store, 2 pubs, cafes, bakery, take away, in fact, everything you would expect. My husband and I enjoy using the community walking track from time to time, and the grandchildren just love the High Country Rail Trail, though I have to admit that they have a lot more energy than we do nowadays. The central parkland is a pleasant place to take the grandchildren or just enjoy a quiet moment; and it is also the venue for many of the community events and concerts. The nearby Mitta Mitta River and Lake Hume have brought us decades of boating, water skiing and fishing fun; and even though we are in drought right now, it won't take much to fill Lake Hume again.
